1967, the birth of an icon
In the mid-1960s the American automotive landscape was dominated by the Ford Mustang. It was intorduced in 1964 and it was said to be the „best american muscle car” that captured the hearts of the car enthusiasts. In response, GM wanted a car that is not only their own version of American muscle but a car that is more desirable in every aspect. The goal was to knock the Mustang off of its title and the result was the ’67 Chevrolet Camaro.
First Generation (1967-1969):
Initially the Camaro’s codename was the „Panther” and it was introduced 2 years after the Mustangs debut. After its introduction the Camaro quickly got quite popular. The main reason probably was the wide range of types offered. Beside the base model there was the SS (Super Sport), the RS (Rally Sport) and the Z/28 model which was the absolute top high-performance model. It was equipped with the same 5.7-litre V8 engine that was used in the Firebird TransAm. It had a huge influence on the culture appeared in several movies like the Better Off Dead, or the Eat My Dust or later in the 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2003. The biggest downside of the first-generation probably was that it was discontinued in 1969.
Second Generation (1970-1981):
The second generation of the Camaro reached the market in 1970. The main differences was the longer wheelbase and the more refined styling, This generation emphasized comfort and handling. The Z/28 returned with a 5,7-litre V8 engine and also the SS trim offered a 6.5-litre V8 for 2 years catering to enthusiasts seeking both performance and luxury. Even though the concept was fabulous because of the oil crisis the era of the muscle cars ended in the ’70s. The 1980 Camaro adapting to the new economic situation was made underpowered with its 267-cubic-inch V8 making only 120 hp. Probably the most recallable role for this car in the cinemas was the 2009 Transformers movie in which Bumblebee – one of the Transformers – started in a ’76 Camaro later changes into a 5th generation model.
Third Generation (1982-1992):
The third generation was promised to be the best Camaro made so far. It had a more aerodynamic design, and featured advancements such as fuel injection. However due to rising gas prices caused by the fuel crisis this generation was the least favourite amongst the fans. It was available with 3 different types of engines: the most powerful V8, the more economical friendly V6 and the worst muscle car engine ever made, the 2.5-litre inline 4 engine nicknamed the „Iron Duke”. This engine was capable of make a strong 90 hp performance and was accessible between 1982-1986. In 1982 a gen 3 Z28 Camaro was the pace car for the 66th Indianapolis 500 race. To celebrate this honor GM decided to make a so-called „Indy 500 Commemorative” Edition with 6360 pieces.
