The Iron Pig

If you are interested in the newsletter, I would like to take the opportunity to invite you to our museum, where there is currently a Japanese themed exhibition, and you can see two of the models in the letter, an FJ40 and a GX.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the best-known and most reliable off-road vehicles in the automotive industry, which has been on the market for more than 70 years. The first model was produced in 1951, when Toyota developed a robust all-terrain vehicle for the Japanese police and military agencies. The FJ model gave birth to the Land Cruiser, which has now sold more than 10 million units worldwide. The story of the Toyota Land Cruiser began in the early 1950s, when the US Army commissioned Toyota to produce a Jeep-like vehicle in Japan after World War II. In 1951, the Toyota Jeep BJ was created. The name was changed to Land Cruiser in 1954 to avoid conflict with the Jeep brand name.
The first model, the FJ25 (1955-1960), was followed by the famous FJ40 (1960-1984) series. Later came the FJ55 (1967-1980), the FJ60 (1980-1989), and the FJ70 (from 1984), which is still in use in many places.
Over the years, the Land Cruiser has undergone many changes, both in terms of technology and design. In the 1960s, the J40 series was introduced, which won the hearts of customers with its classic off-road vehicle shape and robust construction. This series stood out for its reliability and durability, especially in extreme conditions. In the 1980s, the J60 series already had comfort functions, so it was comfortable even during longer trips, while maintaining its excellent off-road capabilities.
Throughout its history, the Toyota Land Cruiser has lived through 14 generations, each generation bringing new technological and design improvements. The very first model, introduced in 1951, was followed by the J20 and J30 series in the late 1950s, followed by the J40 series, which became an iconic off-road version.
Introduced in 1998, the J100 series took the Land Cruiser to a whole new level, as it was the first to focus entirely on luxury and long-distance travel comfort, while maintaining excellent off-road qualities.
The most powerful version is the current J300 series, which debuted in 2021. The most powerful model has a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 409 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. This engine far surpasses all previous Land Cruiser models in terms of performance, while providing maximum comfort and safety through advanced technology systems. Today, the Toyota Land Cruiser is the perfect combination of luxury and functionality. New developments, such as a dynamic suspension system, advanced safety systems, make the car even more efficient and comfortable.
The Land Cruiser proves its mettle not only in everyday use, but also in the most extreme places, be it desert heat, tropical rainforests or mountainous terrain. It is no coincidence that military and humanitarian organizations in many countries also like to use it.
Throughout its history, the FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser also played a significant role in military use. The Land Cruiser, especially the FJ40 model, is one of Toyota’s best-known and most reliable SUVs, produced since the 1960s. The popularity of the FJ40 was brought not only by the versions intended for the civilian market, but also by its use by various governments and military organizations.
The FJ40 Land Cruiser was also used by the US Army and other allied forces in the Vietnam War, especially in difficult terrain. Although the U.S. military primarily used the Willys Jeep, the FJ40’s reliability and off-road capability made it popular with Allied forces in South Vietnam.
The FJ40 served as a military vehicle in many countries in Africa and the Middle East, as its robust construction and ease of maintenance made it an excellent choice for desert warfare and difficult terrain. The Toyota Land Cruiser was so widespread in the Middle East that it was regularly used by various insurgent groups, and its more modern versions played a key role in the conflict between Chad and Libya in the late 1980s, which later became known as the „Toyota War”. . In this war, the Chadian army and local militias used Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles to fight the Libyan forces. The light, fast and agile Land Cruisers were a huge advantage over the heavier but slow Libyan armored vehicles.
These military engagements of the FJ40 Land Cruiser have cemented its reputation as a highly versatile, durable and reliable off-road vehicle that has proven itself in the most extreme conditions around the world.
It is interesting that the Land Cruiser is one of the most durable cars, many examples have covered more than 1 million kilometers, thus confirming Toyota’s reputation for quality and reliability.
