The BMW S85B50 is a naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine that replaced the BMW S62 V8 in the M5 and was produced between 2005 and 2010. The BMW V10 S85 engine was designed by the engineers of BMW M GmbH. BMW M GmbH is the division of BMW that develops and manufactures performance-oriented “M” models. The engineers put a lot of emphasis on performance, driving experience and reliability when designing the engine. It was BMW’s first and only production V10 engine, and the first V10 petrol engine available in a production sedan (limousine).

The S85 presented in the E60 M5 was inspired by BMW’s previous involvement in Formula 1. It is particularly interesting that 1,364 units with a six-speed manual transmission were produced for the American and Canadian markets, and a total of 20,548 units were produced. Unlike most BMW M engines, the S85 is not connected to a standard BMW engine.

The S85 has two overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and dual VANOS (variable valve timing). The engine block and cylinder head are made of aluminum alloy.

Displacement 4999 cc. Peak power is 373 kW (~507 hp) at 7,750 rpm and peak torque is 520 Nm at 6,100 rpm. The “prohibition” is the engine’s speed limit, 8250 rpm, and its specific power is one of the highest among normally aspirated mass-produced car engines.

Over the years, he was not only liked by fans and the public, but also by professional journalists who rewarded him with numerous awards that he won:

2005 International Engine of the Year, Best Performance Engine, Best Engine Over 4.0L, Best New Engine.

2006 International Engine of the Year, Best Performance Engine, Best Engine Over 4.0L.

The best performance engine of 2007, the best engine over 4.0 liters.

2008 Best engine over 4.0 liters.
